Copyrighted (Passworded) Compilation/Decompilation

Unread postby Mike Lobanovsky » Sat Aug 26, 2006 1:48 am

Dear friends,

For quite some time now FBSL hasn't provided the means to protect your legal
copyright regarding the scripts you produce. Every single one of them could
be restored to the original even if compiled into an executable.

This was done on purpose to discourage those (ab)users who might be willing
to try and develop commercial products using unlicensed copies of FBSL. Of
course, the FBSL team realized that this restriction might also affect the
productivity of those of you who didn't intend to sell but just wanted to
ensure that what's yours is yours.

Now the time has come to remove this restriction. Starting with the next
build, FBSL will provide passworded compilation/decompilation of FBSL
executables. This means that you'll be able to decompile somebody else's
executables only if you know the password with which they have been compiled,
or if they have been compiled without a password at all.

Password protection uses 64-bit cryptography which means that a hypothetic
hacker will have to try at least 4+ billion combinations to obtain the correct
key. It is highly unlikely that FBSL applications will be worth such an effort
in the foreseeable future.

It is my sincere belief that such a measure will give a boost to your imagination
and we all will soon see many more useful applications to compliment the code
base which we already have now.

Yours very truly,

Mike Lobko-Lobanovsky

Dear all,

Thanks to Mike, this is now a reality and the FBSL 3.26.0 dated from 28th of August 2006 allows this protection!
You can now safely compile any FBS to EXE, and try to revert it without the good password to see the results :)

Save this as SELF.FBS
Code: Select all
#AppType console
? "Hello!"
  Fbsl2Exe( ".\self.fbs", FBSL_CONSOLE, "Gerome" )
  ? "Self compiled!"
End If

Save this as Decompile.fbs to see how protected is your EXEcutable :)
Code: Select all
#AppType console
  ? Exe2Fbsl( ".\self.exe", "Test" )

Big thanks to Mike!
